Weather
Juneau and the surrounding area are located in the Tongass National
Forest. It is the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world.
Two words should catch your attention there: temperate and rainforest.
Spring and summer days can range from sunny with temperatures in the
70s to continuous rain and temperatures in the mid 50s. In other words,
prepare for rain and consider yourself lucky if it doesnt.
Terrain
The area is rugged to the extreme. Mountains literally start at water's
edge, and go from sea level to over 4000 feet very quickly. The extremely
thick underbrush of alder and devils club (a spiny shrub to be
avoided) make going off trail all but impossible. Boats and float planes
are the standard mode of transportation as there are no roads into or
out of Juneau. Most streams have at least a passable trail along side
of them. Streams that cross the roads in and around Juneau generally
have better trails. Please call or e-mail
me if you have any specific questions about the weather or terrain here
in Southeast Alaska.
